Milagu Kuzhambu


Whenever my appa is down with cold, he would ask amma to prepare this milagu kuzhambu.He calls it "Marunthu(medicine) Kuzhambu as pepper helps in curing cold.





Ingredients:

1. Pepper - 11/2 tsp
2. Coriander Seeds - 1 tsp
3.Thoor Dhal - 1 tsp
4. Urad Dhal - 1 tsp
5. Red Chillies - 2
6. Tamarind Juice - 1/2 Cup
7. Salt - Needed qty
8. Gingelly Oil - 2 tbs
9. Onion - 1 (Chopped finely)
10. Garlic - 10-12 Cloves
11. Curry leaf - A Few
12. Mustard - 1 tsp
13. Jaggery - 1 inch piece
14. Brinjal - 3 (Optional)
15. Vengaya Vadagam(Seasoning Vadam) - Little qty (optional)

Procedure:

1.Dry roast pepper,dhaniya,urid dhal,thoor dhal and red chillies in a pan and powder it in a mixie.Keep this masala powder aside.
2.Now,Chop onion and garlic.
3.In a pan,add oil and mustard.Allow the mustard to pop.
4.Now add onion and garlic.Fry them well,till both turns golden brown.
5.If you have Brinjal or Drumstick,cut them and add to the fried onion and garlic(adding vegetable to this kuzhambhu is optional).
6.Add tamarind extract,masala powder,jaggery and the salt.
7.Allow the contents to boil well.
8.Once the kuzhambhu is thick,take off from the stove and garnish with curry leaf.
9.If you have seasoning vadam(we call it vengaya vadagam),fry it in little oil and add to kuzhambhu(optional).

Note:If you want,you can also add little quantity of Sukku powder(Dried ginger powder) when you add the powdered masala to the kuzhambhu.Sukku helps in getting rid of body pain.
